A three ring binder containing photocopies of civil war letters written to Samuel Averill Whittlesey during the Civil War from father, mother, and sister Laura. Eight large envelopes with typed address: "Samuel A. Whittlesey, Company I, 22d Reg't, C. V. Washington, D. C." Each envelope contains multiple letter from various individuals. At the back are five related photcopied photographs with Samuel A. Whittlesey as an elderly man: 1. Picture portrait of Samuel A. Whittlesey. 2. Group in front of a house: N. S. Whittlesey, Mrs. S. A. Whittlesey, S. A. Whittlesey, N. S. Whittlesey, Jr.,John S,Whittlesey, Jr., John S. Whittlesey, David L. Whittlesey, Frances Whittlesey. 3. Mr. & Mrs. S. A. Whittlesey flanking an unknown woman. 4. Mr. & Mrs. S. A. Whittlesey (left) 5. Unknown elderly couple (right) Samuel Averill Whittlesey had family connections to Washington, CT and there is additional original correspondence in the Gunn Museum collection between him and his friends and family in Washington, CT. (Note: Numbers written in pencil on the bottom right of the pages were organizing for a Civil War transcription project at Shepaug Middle School.) |
