2015.27.1 - Sampler
Sampler made by Amaryllis Gunn [later Amarylis (Gunn) Canfield], the sister of Frederick Gunn, on cotton fabric using silk thread. Two alphabets are at the top followed by a row of numbers, then "Amaryllis Gunn Samp/wrought by her in the sum/mer of 1821 Agt 9 years", then in a blue outlined box center bottom " Mrs. E. Moseley/Instructress" and at the bottom "Washington." There are flowers on either side of the box.

Shaker type wooden firkin bucket with handle (a); lid (b) initialed L.A.C. (Lewis A. Canfield) carved into the lid. Lewis Canfield was one of the four leaders of the abolition movement in Washington, Connecticut.

JW5812 - Negative, Glass-plate
Boyhood home of Senator Orville Platt, located at 98 Wykeham Road in Washington, Connecticut. The Platts were abolitionists and this house is thought to have been a stop for slaves on the Underground Railroad. This house was once the home of Mr. Miles Aspinwall and his sister, Miss Sarah Aspinwall. More recently it was part of the Wykeham Rise School.
