The Sherman House - The Villa Lucerne, no longer standing, in the vicinity of 64 East Shore Road Built by Frederick Sherman in 1873 at the south end of the Lake, the Sherman House could accommodate 50 guests, had a fine horse barn, a fleet of 22 new boats, and a beautiful view looking northward up the Lake. In 1896, Sherman sold his hotel to Elise Feldstein, who changed its name to Villa Lucerne. She died in 1901, leaving no will. Sometime after 1903 the hotel was abandoned and gradually dismantled for building materials. In 1924, William McKay of Bristol bought the property. He built several rental cottages on the site, and also built a barn on the foundation of the old hotel. |
