The Cheree Hotel - Carter House - Lakeshore House at 105 West Shore Road Built in 1866 by George Chauncy Hitchcock, the Cheree Hotel was situated at the southerly curve below Cheree Point on West Shore Road. It offered dining, boats and fishing tackle for rent, and had a barn for horses. Hitchcock also built the first real road from the south end of the Lake to his new property, and planted a mile of shade trees along the way. The hotel was sold in 1872 to Charles Carter, who called it the Carter House, and sold again to Charles Hurlburt in 1884, who renamed it the Lakeshore House. In 1886, it was described as "a favorite resort for picnic and fishing parties and those in quest of first-class fish dinners . . . There is also a woodland grove with tables for picnics and a platform for dancing." The property changed hands again in 1891 and 1900, and was demolished in 1901. |
