Barbour residence, Washington, Conn.; Rossiter and Wright, architects, ca. 1885. Named for the outcropping of stone circled by the driveway, this$22,000 house overlooking the Shepaug Valley is still occupied. The firm built several houses here, and Ehrick K. Rossiter (1854 - 1941), the principal designer, retired to this region in about 1931. Born in Paris of an artistic family, he graduated from Cornell, returned to Europe....(missing sentence on copy)...example, the parallel lines at the base of the second floor pull together the circular alcove, the dark entranceway, and the projecting staircase block. The visitor is drawn into the darkness of the porch, and then, once inside, attracted by the openness and light of the circular parlor and piazza. Rossiter also contrasted his interior spaces creatively--- the public area of the hall with the more intimate nook, and the white parlor with the redwood den."
