Description |
Oil painting of Chief Waramaug overlooking Lake Waramaug by Edwin Willard Deming, in an American Impressionist Hassam style frame, commissioned by the Holzworth family. The view is to the northwest from Tinker Hill or Mount Busnhell. Chief Waramaug stands robed with arms outstretched over the lake with girl in braids standing at his side (possibly his daughter - Lillinonah?). Chief Waramaug is dressed in long beige robe outlined in red with a red and orange circular symbol painted on the back. Two Native Americans - American Indians are seated in the background. The lake is a brilliant blue surrounded by the green hillsides meeting the pale sky in the horizon. Arrow Point appears visible in the background of this northern view, meaning the Chief is probably standing on the south shore, possibly on Mount Bushnell or Tinker Hill. There appears to be a small Native American village with wigwams and long houses visible on the eastern shore of Arrow Point. Signed lower right corner: "QEW Deming". Printed in gold on a black label backside: "The Palette Art Co/ Artists Materials and Draughtmen's Supplies/ Pictures, Picture Framing, Cameras & Supplies/ 327 Fifth Ave. New York". Written in pencil on frame backside: "9056MKJ, 519". |
