Henry Eldred Sackett's daily diary for the year 1855. The diary is leather- bound, with front flap closure, and embossed with "DIARY, 1855." Henry Sackett had a school in Washington, CT. He left the town to visit his father in Garnavillo, Iowa. The diary entires include his journey accounts. Immediately upon arrival the Henry Sackett family endured trouble in Iowa. In less than a year Henry lost three sisters in Iowa (Achsah d. 9/21/1855, Mary d. 10/2/1855, and Sarah d. 7/14/1856) between the ages of 14 and 27. Henry's diary has heavily detailed entries on agriculture and also reflect his views on the country, politics, and strong Congregational faith. The back of the diary contains an account with the pieces of goods bought and sold; the wages paid to hired men. |

Henry Eldred Sackett (1853 - 1867) was a farmer and school teacher in Washington, CT. In 1855 he traveled to Garnavillo, Iowa where his father, Benjamin, had a large farm. He returned to Washington and married his wife, Rebecca Marilla Hine in 1857. He died of consumption, (lung problem-wheat fever) and is buried in the Brinsmade plot at the Washington Green Cemetery. He is a direct descendent of Simon Sackett one of the founders of Cambridge, MA in 1636. His father, Benjamin, (1797 -1885) owned a large farm in Garnovillo, Iowa. Henry's gradfather, Benjamin, 1762-1844, was from Warren, CT and a Revolutionary War veteran. His Georgian Federal stone house in Warren was built in 1799 and is on the Historical Register. His great grandfather, Justus, 1730-1815, was an early settler of Warren, CT and one of the founding members of the Warren Congregational Church. Captain Justus was also a Revolutionary War veteran. Rebecca Marilla Hine Sackett , 1834-1880, was the daughter of Herman Hine and Rebecca Pond. Capt. Hine was the First Selectman of Washington, CT. Herman was born in 1782 and died in 1865. Rebecca Pond was the sister of Samuel and Gideon Pond, the missionaries to the Dakotas who founded the mission station at Shahspee, Minnesota in 1843. |
