    An early 19 century carpenter's tool chest, unusual because of a double hinge system to allow easy access to the interior, there is a patent on the design. The brass plate bore the name H. Baldwin, Washington, CT The lid is one storage area and the base of the chest, another. There are two metal locks and metal carrying handles on the sides.

    #1, one of 3 handmade planes. A card on the piece notes plane iron specially made in the piece. Rectangular shape with curved rear handle and narrow horizontal front handle. Marked Weldon or Waldon.

    #2 of three handmade planes. A tag on this one "Plough Plane" 1760 -1800 USA. Probably British made iron work. 2 blocks of wood hold the plane guide. Plane come through top block at an angle, held in by a wooden piece - adjustable frame held together by 2 wooden brackets.

    #3 of three handmade planes. Tag notes this is Plough Plane #II, 1750 at earliest. Made is the USA probably with British iron work. 2 blocks of wood hold the plane guide and plane. 2 adjustable handles secrued with wooden slides.

  7. F 143 - Adz, Carpenter's

    Carpenter's Adz, a cutting tool used for smoothing or carving wood. Similar to an ax but with cutting edge perpendicular to the handle. This is a foot adz due to the longer handle, used with both hands, the cutting edge striking at foot or shin level. Inscription on the blade bears company logo and abbreviated name "No. 91" and warranted steel. Mostly unclear.

  8. F 145 - Plane, Round

    A handmade rounding plane of beechwood, used to cut a simple concave or convex shape in the face of edge of a board to create a single element of a complex profile moulding. It consists of a black of wood with the blade angled into a hole near the front of the block and a gripped handle at the back. The blade is removeable and can fall out.

  9. F 146 - Square, Try

    Wood (oak?) Try square for 90' angles, with miter at corner for 45" angle. Held together at angle by wooden dowels. 1/2" hole one inch from end, circle etched into wood in middle. Tool used for marking and measuring a piece of wood. To "try" a surface is to check its straightness or correspondence to an adjoining surface. It consists of a broad blade nailed to a handle to form a right angle. The blade has a 3/4" hole at the open end.

    Chisel with a metal blade with a wood handle used to cut wood, stone or metal. It cuts the material using a driving force applied by hand, mallet or hammer.

    Handmade wooden brace used to drill holes in wood. Pressure is applied to the top and the tool is rotated with a u-shaped grip which gives greater torque. The bit is missing on this piece.

  12. F 149 - Plane, Smoothing

    Wooden smoothing plane (no blade) which is usually the last plane used on a wood surface and removes wood in strips. The throat may be adjusted for a tight opening so as to allow only a very fine shaving to reduce tear-out of the grain to a minimum. One edge is longer than the other to form a corner.

    Wooden female thread cutter used for cutting threads into wooden pieces to be joined together. Two boed strips of wood with matching grooves that are held in place on wither end by wood pegs.

  14. F 152 - Auger

    2" wood and cast iron auger used to drill that usually includes a rotating helical screw blade called a "flighting" to act as a screw conveyor to remove the drilled out material. There is a screw at the base of the flighting to ease it into the wood.

    Metal 2.5" auger with a wooden handle. The small screw at the base was used to start the hole and would widen as you twisted deeper. The screw would also lift out the unwanted material.

  16. F 154 - Mallet

    Wooden mallet usually used to knock wooden pieces together or to drive dowels or chisels. It gives better control than a metal hammer or mallet. The mallet is trapezoid in shape, top and bottom parallel and the sides angle out at the bottom. The handle is very smooth and is fitted through a hole in the mallet head.

    Wooden mallet made from burl, a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner, commonly found in the form of a rounded growth on a tree trunk. The handle is smooth, but the head is rough and knotted.

    A draw knife - a 16" blade attached to 2 wooden handles, used to shape wood by removing shavings. It is pulled or "drawn" toward the user, hence the name.
