Description |
German collector's doll, "Elsbeth", from the High Black Forest, with body and head of composition covered with stockinette in Native costume. Molded and painted face; black brows and lashes, large, brown, side-glancing eyes, small protruding nose, red, closed mouth, blonde hair in long braids. Wearing a high red straw hat with brim turned up on the sides and green beads over a black floral scarf tied with bow in the back and front. Wears a white cotton blouse with puffy sleeves and lace trim under a maron felt vest with wide black embroidered collar trimmed with gold braid, and front laced with gold sequin buttons. . Wears a long, cotton print skirt in colors of orange, yellow, green, and white in a floral design on a black field. Over the skirt she wears a long, cotton apron in blue, green and red floral stripes on a white field tied in a bow in the back with a red and white embroidered ribbon. The apron is tiered on the bottom. Underclothing consists of a white cotton petticoat & pants trimmed with red ric-rac. She is also wearing black shoes & red stockings. In her right hand she holds a green print jacket ; pink and white flowers in the left ; and a blue, filled kerchief is tied around her left wrist. Under the skirt is a cotton, print pocket cantaining a paper pamphlet with "ELsbeth" etched in black ink between two hand drawn flowers. Etched on the back in black ink: "Prechtal/ Black Forest/ Clockmaker's /daughter" Typed on yellowed paper attached to pamphlet interior: "Leni from the "High Black-Forest"./At the south around Freiburg in the Breisgau, there is the High-/Black-Forest, still wild, thick woods, never touched since generations! / These people are still remaining in the old styles. So, for every day ,/ they wear a cotton skirt, the blue colored is preferred with red trim-/ming. From the white blouse only the puffy sleeves are to be seen, / gathered and bound above the elbow. The bodice is mostly red velvet, / from the brightest red to the darkest, up to the age, and shows the most / precious embroidery on both front part. it is buttoned in front and the lower half is braided together with metal string./ On the head they wear a little black silk bonnet, on the brim at the/ back there is a small black bow with long ends. On top of it a white / straw hat is to be worn, decorated of a black silk ribbon and 4 pompoms, / the so-called roses-black for the women, red for the maids-. A cotton/ apron is to be worn.
