Description |
Wooden food storage box used for the storage and distribution of codfish. On the side of the box it reads"6 LBS PURE BONELESS GEORGES CODFISH PUT UP EXPRESSLY FOR FAMILY USE." Box is missing the top lid which would have more information. Lid would slide on via gooves at top of the side of the box. Cod would likely have been packaged with salt to preserve the fish. Instructions were given on similar codfish boxes for how to prepare such as: "TO REMOVE PRESERVATIVE/ FRESHEN THE FISH AS FOLLOWS/ SOAK I5 MINUTES IN RUNNING/ WATER - THEN 5 MINUTES IN FRESH/ WARM WATER - THEN BRING TO/ A BOIL SLOWLY IN FRESH WATER". Georges Codfish is named for the region where the cod is caught. Box is made from five pieces of wood. Sides of box are attatched via simple through dovetails. Bottom of box is attatched via nails. |
