Description |
The sampler of Catharine Brown Smith [later known as Catharine Brown (Smith) Gold, Washington, Connecticut, dated 1823, and in a wooden frame. The sampler is worked in silk thread on linen; dimentions are 12 1/2" x 10". The top 2/3rds of the field is occupied by alphabets and numerals separate by cross borders. Below is the signature "Catharine Smith's samplar/ wrought Sept. 1823 Aged 11." Within a border below, flanked by small floral motifs, is the inscription "Miss S. Gunn/ Instructress." At the bottom is embroidered "WASHINGTON." Two folders of genealogy accompany the needlework. We're thinking the teacher is Susan Gunn. |
