Description |
An 18th century wooden bearing block cap from the Cogswell Gristmill in New Preston, CT that would have secured a two inch steel shaft of the mill wheel to keep it from hopping around. The block is made from an unknown fine grained old growth timber, with a concave trench in the center covered with a piece of metal (a poured lead bearing babbitt) and four half inch bolt holes, on either side of the trench, where it was attached. Old Gunn Museum tag on it says "From Cogswell gristmill on Aspetuck River in New Preston, torn down in 1994". This building was located on the west side of East Shore Road in the center of New Preston Village next to the waterfall and was last known as "Joe Young's Place, A Place to Eat" before it was demolished. |
