Description |
Large, hand-sewn, American flag from the Civil War, with red and white stripes, blue field with 36 white stars. The stripes are of colored cloth sewn together and the blue field joins three 18" wide pieces, with the stars cut away and the resulting spaces filled with a white linen and the edges stitched. A side binding indicates "Annin & Co. Makers".The flag is inscribed at the lower right corner of the blue field. The inscription, stitched of white thread reads: "Presented To / S. Jay Nettleton / By his Brothers Charles & Henry / December 24th 1866". Samuel Jay Nettleton was a Civil War soldier from Washington, Connecticut. |
