Scope & Content |
Handwritten leather-bound diary of Rebecca Marilla (Hine) Sackett (1834 - 1880) for the year 1862. The contents includes heavy religious overtones, her husband, Henry Eldred Sackett's, school in Washington, CT, the Civil War, Gettysburg, and daily domestic life at the homestead in Washington, CT. She writes from Jan. 1862 to September 1862. Accounting notes are found at the end of the diary. Diary is brown leather with a flap closure on the front. The flap is stamped in glod letters: "DIARY, 1862." Rebecca Marilla (Hine) Sackett (1834 - 1880) was the daughter of Capt. Herman Hine and Rebecca Pond. Capt. Herman Hine was the first Selectman of Washington, CT, he was born in 1782 and died in 1865. Rebecca Pond was the sister of Samuel and Gideon Pond, the missionaries to the Dakota Indians, who founded the mission station at Shakopee, Minnesota in 1843. |

Rebecca Pond was the sister of Samuel and Gideon Pond the missionaries to the Dakotas who founded the mission station at Shahspee, Minnesota in 1843. |
